Nanotechnology water repellent spray: how does it work?

Nanotechnology is the science, engineering and manipulation of matter at the nanometre level (billionths of a metre).     Would ProtectMe protect my newly steam cleaned lounge from mould? We live in a damp house and even the use of dehumidifiers does not totally control the growth of mould. I have just thoroughly cleaned our lounge after noticing that is smelled musty. Now I would like to protect it a bit more.

    1. Hi Uli, thanks for your comment. The hydrophobic properties of protectME prevent moisture absorption into the fibres and prevents bacteria and fungi from developing. Our research suggests that it would help to prevent mould:
      The product generates an inhospitable environment depriving microorganisms of moisture and food. The product smooths the surface, resulting in up to 50-70% less adhesion to microorganisms. By its hydrophobic effect, water will be concentrated on the surface at an optimum, leaving a maximum of dry places, where a high natural death rate of wet germs is achieved. Furthermore it has anti-static effect, which results in reduced adhesion of home dust.

        I wonder if your product is safe to create a waterproof layer on fabric masks? It is safe to breathe through it?

          protectME is safe to use on fabric masks. Once cured, it doesn’t change the look, feel or smell of the fabric and creates a breathable coating.

          Obviously, we want to reiterate that it only protects from water and has not been tested to work against viruses or microbes. We hope this helps!

          I wonder if your product is safe to create a nelement proofing layer on rubber flooring for children’s playground? The elements are UV light causing fading of colors and dust from outside sand which both require protection.


          1. Sorry for the late reply. Our fabric protector is UV stable so the coating itself will not fade in the sun, but it is not UV resistant so it won’t prevent colours from fading unfortunately. That is because UV resistant agents give protected fabrics a waxy look and feel, so we decided not to include them in our formulation. We hope this helps!

  3. Dear protectME Team,

    I am in year 10 and doing a science depth-study. I was wondering whether your sprays work on glass. My depth study is based around the effect that surface texture (created by these coatings) has on the time and speed at which a droplet rolls off an inclined surface as well as the size and shape of the droplet. I will be using a glass/acrylic sheet to make these investigations and wanted to double check before I made the purchase. Please respond ASAP because my assignment is due soon and I need to conduct the experiment.

  4. Given that all things end up in our lungs or digestive system at some point in what ever way (ingested or inhaled) or in an animals or plant system what guarantees are there that the nano stuff can not cause nutrient absorption problems?

  5. Hi, I intend to spray on my shirts. Can it be washed in the wahing machine, then ? How often do I have to reapply the spray if i wash my shirts daily? Will the fabric remain breathable ?

    Seem that water particles could not penetrate through a fibre after applying spray, does your product create a filtering effect and stop particles getting through a fibre cloth? If yes, what is the size of particle could be filtered after spraying your product?

    1. Hi Fai, thanks for your comment. protectME creates a protective barrier around the individual fibre strands. Therefore, the filtering effect would be based on how tightly woven the material is. We hope this helps!

    If i need to blow dry / apply heat, and spray a 40% alcohol products diluted in water on vests that are worn by players repeatedly without washing, would your products hold? and, for how long?
    Would it reduce the sweat absorption amount?
    How much product is needed per surface area for each application?

    1. Hi Barry,
      Our coating is resistant to PH levels comprised between 2-13 and to temperatures up to 250 degrees Celsius. As long as you keep within these constraints, protectME should last for up to 3 years, depending on traffic and use. Some areas of the vests may be more subject to abrasion than others and the coating may wear off quicker in these areas.
      In terms of sweat absorption, depending how thick the fabric is, the inside of the vests may not be coated and still absorb sweat. You may need to test it out to be certain.
      We recommend applying 100ml per m2 of fabric.

  8. If I have already scotch guarded my new off-white lounge, can I still use your product on top? We don’t feel as though the scotch guard repels dirt. The base cover of the lounge is not removable if I am to wash the covers.

    1. Hi Thanh, sorry for the late reply. We don’t recommend applying protectME on top of Scotchguard, because protectME needs to be able to bond with the fabric to form the coating and Scotchguard would prevent that from happening. Our suggestion is to wait until Scotchguard wears off (usually about 12 months), and then apply protectME. protectME will help repelling dirt and making it easier to clean your fabric, but please note you won’t see the same beading effect you would with liquid stains. We hope this helps!

  9. If the protectMe spray is applied to a fabric, and that fabric is put underwater, will it still be dry when it comes up?

    1. Hi Vera,
      Yes the fabric will be wet. protectME is a product used to repel liquid stains coating each fibre making the fabric still permeable. This does not change the look, smell or feel of the fabric and therefore and not to be confused with a water proofer.

    1. Hi Arpit,

      protectME is primarily intended to repel liquid stains. It will certainly help cleaning oily stains (chocolate, tomato sauce, sunscreen etc) and dirt marks but we can’t guarantee that there will be no marks left. This is especially true when force is applied onto the fabric, i.e. fingers smudging chocolate.

    2. Hi, if I sprayed my rug with ProtectMe, do I still need to or can I clean my rug with one of those no vac foamy spray for rug and carpet?

        Thanks for your message.

        You may still need to spot clean even though you have used protectME but the stains should be easier to remove.
        protectME is resistant to PH levels between 2-13. Most spot cleaners are between this range so should be fine to use but it’s a good idea to check the PH levels of the foam cleaner before you start.


  10. Hi,
    When I spray it on my car seat which is synthetic leather, water marks are left on them. Do I have to even the liquid over the surface to prevent leaving droplets to dry? What is your advice?

      We recommend to use a soft brush or soft clean cloth to help buff into the fabric and ensure even product distribution, once protectME has been sprayed on.
